MANITOBA PHARMACISTS LOOK FORWARD TO PROVIDING MORE ACCESSIBLE HEALTH SERVICES IN 2014

Manitoba Society of Pharmacists anticipates expanded scope of pharmacy services in the New Year

Manitoba pharmacists will be able to deliver more accessible health services, including a limited ability to assess patients and provide prescriptions as well as to administer injections, in 2014. The Manitoba Society of Pharmacists (MSP) anticipates the expansion of the current pharmacist role alongside the passage of the new Pharmaceutical Act. "We're excited that Manitobans will now have access to more health services in their own neighbourhoods," said Dr. Brenna Shearer, MSP Executive Director. "Pharmacists are the most accessible healthcare provider, and with the newly expanded scope of services rolling out in the New Year, they'll be able to use their specialized knowledge and expertise to offer improved health services in more accessible locations." On Dec. 20, the Province of Manitoba announced the passage of the new Pharmaceutical Act. With the newly-expanded scope of practice, Manitoba pharmacists will have the ability to prescribe and administer select drugs under limited conditions, administer vaccines and issue short-term refill prescriptions for patients with chronic conditions. These new professional services are expected to prevent unneccesary wait times at walk in clinics and emergency rooms. "The Manitoba Society of Pharmacists has been dedicated to seeing the Act become a reality," said Scott McFeetors, MSP President. "This is indeed a proud day for pharmacists in our province, and we look forward to watching the pharmacy landscape change to better serve our patients. Pharmacists will now be able to make an even greater impact on patient care and positive health outcomes for Manitobans." MSP has been working in partnership with the Manitoba Pharmaceutical Association and Manitoba Health to advocate for and source funding for the services provided within the Pharmaceutical Act.
