Pharmacologic Management of Hypertension: Updates from the Hypertension Canada Consensus Guidelines

Dr. Jonathan Gabor is a specialist in general internal medicine with post-graduate subspecialty training and expertise in several areas, including general cardiology, cardiac imaging, infectious diseases, medical dermatology, hypertension, heart failure, atrial fibrillation, general hepatology, metabolic syndrome, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. He is a graduate of the University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine and completed residency and fellowship at the University of Manitoba, where he undertook a combined fellowship in Infectious Diseases and Medical Microbiology and then returned to general internal medicine to obtain his Fellowship from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in 2012. Since then, he has been practicing in the community in Winnipeg at the Health Plus Specialists in Windsor Park, and also in rural Manitoba in the Interlake and Southern health regions, operating several hypertension clinics. He is a Specialist in Clinical Hypertension from the American Society of Hypertension, a member of the Consensus Guidelines Committee and Resistant Hypertension Subcommittee of Hypertension Canada, and involved in several subcommittees of the Canadian Heart Failure Society. He is the incoming chair of the Interlake-Eastern Regional Health Authority Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee and the physician lead for Internal Medicine and Cardiology at Concordia Hospital, Selkirk Hospital, and the Interlake Regional Health Authority.

Session

This presentation will outline the most current guidelines from Hypertension Canada regarding the management of hypertension. Common drug classes, agents, and combinations will be reviewed, and attention will be focused on evidence-based recommendations and cardiovascular benefits. Emphasis will be given to clinical scenarios and pharmacotherapeutic principles of relevance to a pharmacy audience, as well as practical strategies for managing both common and uncommon challenges.


Big and small: Nutrient Deficiencies of Anemia

Jennifer Gibson is a pharmacist with My Health Team in Winnipeg, an interdisciplinary team practice within family physician clinics to provide direct patient care and leverage community resources. Formerly, Jennifer cared for renal transplant recipients in both hospital and ambulatory care settings. She is the recipient of the Canadian Pharmacists Association's Patient Care Achievement Award for Specialty Practice and the College of Pharmacists of Manitoba's Bonnie Schultz Memorial Award for Practice Excellence.  Jennifer is also an Extended Practice Pharmacists in Manitoba, which is an enhanced role that includes independent prescribing of medications within a collaborative team.

Session

Anemia impacts over 30% of the population and is commonly associated with deficiencies in iron, vitamin B12 or folic acid. This talk will review the typical presentation of a person with anemia, laboratory values used to guide therapy, and the use of nutrient supplements to treat the deficiency.


Finding Too Many Needles in a Haystack: Drug Use During Pregnancy, The Case of Antidepressants & Autism

Amani Hamad, BSc (Pharm), M.Sc. (Pharm), PhD candidate, College of Pharmacy at the University of Manitoba

Amani Hamad is PhD candidate at College of Pharmacy at the University of Manitoba. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in Pharmacy from the University of Jordan and practiced as a drug and poison information specialist before pursuing a PhD degree in 2015. Her current research in pharmacoepidemiology focuses on examining the safety of medications used during pregnancy and early childhood in association with chronic childhood diseases. 

I fan Kuo, BSc (Pharm), ACPR, M.Sc., PharmD., College of Pharmacy at the University of Manitoba

Dr. I fan Kuo joined the College of Pharmacy at the University of Manitoba in 2014. She graduated from the University of British Columbia with a post baccalaureate PharmD, and practiced as a clinical pharmacist in cardiovascular diseases before pursuing a research fellowship at the University of British Columbia. Her current research interests span the areas of pharmacoepidemiology, drug utilization, pharmacoeconomic evaluation, clinical decision-making and pharmacy practice.

Session

Recent observational studies reported an increased risk of autism spectrum disorders with prenatal antidepressants exposure. This presentation will assess findings from these studies and provide applicability recommendations.
