Expectations and Realities: Directly Applying The Evidence for Topical Pain Treatments

Jamie Falk is an Assistant Professor at the College of Pharmacy, University of Manitoba and practices as a pharmacist in the department of family medicine at the Kildonan Medical Centre. He currently focuses his clinical and research attention on chronic disease management, specifically related to optimizing drug utilization and the appropriate use and translation of evidence-based information into patient-centered practice

Despite a wide variety of treatment options for chronic pain, most are associated with modest reductions in pain and inconsistent functional improvements. This is weighed against notable adverse events associated with systemic therapies. In this session we’ll explore the current literature with respect to potential benefits, harms, and costs of topical agents used alone and in combination for the treatment of a variety of pain conditions.
