Embracing Obstacles To Innovation: A Short History On The Implementation Of Extended Practice Pharmacy In Long Term Care

Mark Mercure B.Sc. (Pharm), B.C.G.P., EPPh., Manager, Pharma-Medic Services

Mark Mercure is originally from Fort Frances, Ontario. Go Muskies! He completed his bachelor's degree in pharmacy from the University of Manitoba in 2006. After graduating, he was tricked by Shoppers Drug Mart into taking a job in Dryden Ontario, the sworn enemy of the people of Fort Frances. Mark then got married and returned to Manitoba where he really belongs. He took a job as a relief pharmacist with Super Thrifty Drugs, where he had the wonderful opportunity to work in many beautiful small towns around this great province, while occasionally being banished to the strange land of Nunavut. During these travels, Mark worked on obtaining his Certification as a Geriatric Pharmacist from the CCGP. In 2013, Mark became the pharmacy manager of Pharma-Medic Services, a consulting pharmacy which serviced five personal care homes in Brandon. Mark is happily married to Lindsay with two beautiful daughters, Sienna and Paisley. His truck still has a license plate frame that says "Love them Muskies!"

With the introduction of the new Pharmaceutical Act in 2014, Mark was able to obtain his designation as an extended practice pharmacist with a specialty in Geriatric Pharmacy. This is when things started to get weird...

Mark will be speaking about his attempts to bring extended practice pharmacists into the world of long term care in Manitoba, and about the successes and failures encountered along the way.
