1. The Problem We’re Trying to Help Solve

Manitoba pharmacies are carrying a heavy burden in three areas: time, waste, and access.

• Medication waste is significant. About $67 million worth of unused medication is wasted each year in Manitoba, and about $1.7 billion across Canada. In 2022 alone, MMRP collected 20,866 kg of unused medications in the province.

• Billing issues are quietly eating time and revenue. We surveyed 75 community pharmacists in Ontario and then conservatively extrapolated those results across Manitoba’s 508 community pharmacies. Based on that:

  • Pharmacies in Manitoba are likely spending the equivalent of around 2,000 hours per month on calls to adjudicators.

  • On average, each pharmacy may be losing or abandoning roughly 5 prescriptions per month due to unresolved billing issues, and about 15% could be losing 11–20+ prescriptions a month.

  • More than half of pharmacies are likely losing over $151 per month from claim rejections and related issues.

Taken together, this means pharmacists are losing time, losing prescriptions, and watching medications go to waste — all of which limits their ability to focus on professional services and future scope.

2. What RxBilling Genie Does

RxBilling Genie is a pharmacist-developed tool designed to make billing less painful and more predictable. In simple terms, it:

• Reduces calls to adjudicators by giving pharmacists and staff quick, clear answers to billing and rejection questions

• Decreases billing errors and helps prevent clawbacks and lost revenue

• Is available 24/7/365 and fits into existing workflows with minimal disruption

The goal is to give pharmacists back time and mental space so they can focus on patient care and be ready for expanded scope when it comes.

3. What Rx MedMatch Adds

Rx MedMatch focuses on the medication supply and waste side. It:

• Lets pharmacies list overstock and request urgent items from each other

• Helps reduce expiries and disposal costs

• Improves patient access to medications by connecting local pharmacies in a shared network

• In our modelling, even 20% adoption of MedMatch could translate into more than $13 million in waste reduction value
