Why Your Pharmacists Manitoba Membership Matters
Pharmacists Manitoba is all about you, our members, and providing resources to help you adapt to ever-changing practice while continuing to advocate on your behalf. This year, Pharmacists Manitoba was especially active in the government relations space. The collaboration and insight of our members and our working groups, including External Relations, Community Relations, and the Economics Advisory Committee have been invaluable. Some key highlights include:
- Pharmacy Access to Care Pilot:A proposal was submitted to Manitoba Health, Seniors and Long-term Care, and we remain hopeful that this initiative or components of it will move forward.
- Ongoing Advocacy: We’ve voiced pharmacists’ perspectives on dispensing frequency, compounding, HIV care, biosimilars, and contraception.
- National Pharmacare (MEPP): MEPP improves medication access in Manitoba. Advocacy continues for fair compensation, with the 30-day supply a practical compromise given other existing programs.
- Fall Respiratory Campaign: In partnership with Public Health and PHIMS, we led a campaign focusing on prevention and care for children over 2 years of age and seniors, showing measurable health outcomes.
- Community Engagement: A new social media strategy, guided by the Community Relations group, has boosted public interaction and expanded our advocacy reach.
- External Relations: Led by Marianna Pozdirca, the team launched MLA campaigns, met with policymakers, and ran a successful Pharmacists Appreciation Month campaign with strong public and political engagement.
- Social Impact Bond: We secured a one-year extension for the "Quit Smoking with Your Manitoba Pharmacist" program, continuing its positive health impact.
- Professional Development: Our annual conferences, both in-person and virtual, offer valuable learning, networking, and recognition for pharmacy teams across Manitoba.
Looking Forward
We are mindful of the challenges and uncertainties that lie ahead. We are concerned about the long-term sustainability of community pharmacy, which continues to face mounting pressures. Rising wage costs and a shortage of human resources, particularly in rural communities, pose real threats. We remain focused on the possibility of harmonizing the EIA and Pharmacare programs in 2026 and addressing the $6.95 dispensing fee (unchanged for over 30 years). While we cannot guarantee the outcome, we are committed to ongoing discussions to ensure this issue is not ignored. Securing fair compensation for existing and new services remains a top priority. To support these efforts, we have engaged a consultant with extensive experience in the healthcare sector to guide our advocacy.
We urge you to join us and our advocacy efforts as we drive positive change. Your active involvement, contributions, and advocacy are indispensable in shaping the future of pharmacy practice in Manitoba. We look forward to our continued collaboration and the great strides we will undoubtedly achieve together. With your support, we are well-positioned to navigate what lies ahead and continue delivering meaningful results for our profession and the patients we serve.
