The Ozturk Financial Patient Choice Award is presented to a pharmacist who has been nominated by a patient or non-pharmacist colleague(s) for their outstanding commitment to delivering quality patient care and customer service, and for their lasting impact on patient outcomes or community health and wellness.
Corey Thompson
Corey Thompson is a graduate of the 1999 Pharmacy Class of the University of Saskatchewan. Upon graduation, he took a job as a staff pharmacist at Pharmasave in Flin Flon, MB. After two years of being in that role, Corey became a partner of the two Pharmasave stores in that community. The stores have since been acquired but Corey remains the store operator of the Main Street Pharmasave in Flin Flon.
After establishing himself in Flin Flon, he immediately got involved in the community. For the past nine years he served as a board member, technical director, power skating instructor and coach for Flin Flon Minor Hockey from U7 up to U15. He also coached U15 AAA hockey team in the Norman region. He coached soccer as well with the local Phantom Lake Soccer Association. As a leader in the community, he has sat on other committees such the Centennial Cup Committee which made a bid to bring the Junior A National Championship to Flin Flon.
He continues his leadership in the pharmacy world by serving on the Indigenous Ambassador Committee within Neighbourly Pharmacy building on relationships and healthcare outreach for First Nation Communities. When the local hospital pharmacy lost its staff pharmacist Corey stepped up to serve as the pharmacy manager to ensure the people of Flin Flon and surrounding area had a fully functioning hospital with access to medical care and chemotherapy.
The spring of 2025 was a very difficult time for Flin Flon as the town was evacuated due to wildfires in the area. Corey and his team worked quickly to set up a virtual pharmacy in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan to facilitate the transfer of prescriptions so the people of Flin Flon, Creighton, Denare Beach and other neighbouring communities were able to receive their medications.
Working as a pharmacist in a smaller community has been a truly satisfying experience for Corey. He is very proud of the fact he knows almost all his pharmacy’s patients and their families very well and believes fostering these personal relationships brings a more holistic approach to practicing pharmacy. The trust that has been developed between Corey’s pharmacy team and the patients they serve became very clear during this past wildfire season.
Corey is married to his wife Susan and has three children Rene, Jenna and Braden. When not in the pharmacy Corey enjoys playing hockey, fishing, golfing and spending time at the lake.
